“IN ESSENTIALS UNITY, IN NON-ESSENTIALS LIBERTY, IN ALL THINGS CHARITY.” — RUPERTUS MELDINAS

Cornerstones

Perhaps now, more than ever, it is essential to consider what a church believes and doesn’t believe. As the world in the West has recently become awoken to issues of justice, oppression, identity, and truth, it is our deepest conviction that the Gospel of Jesus Christ — and the Gospel alone — satisfies each of these issues holistically, eternally, and sufficiently. For this reason, we subscribe to the following historic confessions and creeds to help clarify what we consider to be the cornerstones of the Gospel:

HEIDELBERG CATECHISM

With the warm tone of a gentle teacher, the Heidelberg Catechism unpacks the gospel, the sacraments, the Ten Commandments, and the Lord’s Prayer.

BELGIC CONFESSION

The oldest and most comprehensive of the RCA’s standards, the Belgic Confession outlines the central beliefs of the Christian faith with a Reformed accent.

CANONS OF DORDT

Written as a response to the Arminian Remonstrance, the Canons of Dort clarify the Reformed teaching of salvation and the centrality God’s covenant grace.

BELHAR CONFESSION

Initially drafted to combat apartheid, this confession acts as the accountable and active agent in deconstructing racism and pursuing redemptive reconciliation.

Cairns

Alongside of these cornerstone beliefs are what we call cairns. In the wilderness, travelers who hike off trail may happen upon a manmade stack of stones called cairns. These stones tell hikers they are headed in the right general direction without keeping them on a specific trail. In the same way, the following are resources we consider cairns, helping us embrace and embody the Gospel in all of life, with all abilities, and for all nations.
